Webcam on the red mountains in Jackson Hole – Wyoming

Jackson Hole is a picturesque valley located among the high Gros Ventre and Teton mountain ranges in the state of Wyoming, near the Idaho border, specifically in Teton County. The term “hole” was often used by early hunters or mountain people to describe vast mountain valleys.

These lowland valleys, surrounded by mountains and rich in rivers and streams, provide ideal habitat for beavers and other fur-bearing animals. Jackson Hole is approximately 89 km long and 10 to 21 km wide. This is a graben valley with an average altitude of 2100 m, and the lowest point at the southern border of the park is at an altitude of 1940 m.

The city of Jackson received its name in late 1893, attributed to Margaret Simpson. At that time, mail was received at her place of residence, since there was no post office. She came up with the name to make mail forwarding easier for people moving out west.

Jackson, officially incorporated in 1914, received its namesake from David Edward “Davy” Jackson. Davy, of Irish and Scots descent, trapped beavers in the area in the late 1820s in partnership with the firm of Smith, Jackson & Sublette.

He is one of the first European Americans to survive an entire winter in this valley.
