Camera overlooking the stunning Waimea Bay beach.

Waimea Bay is located in Haleiwa on the north coast of Oahu in the Hawaii Islands, where the Waimea River flows into the sea. To the east of Waimea Bay lies the Waimea Valley. Waimea means “reddish water” in Hawaiian.

On February 28, 1779, Captain Charles Clerk aboard the ship Resolution stopped at Waimea Bay. Clerk had recently taken command of the ship following the death of CaptainJames Cookat Kealakequa Bay on February 14th. Waimea Bay was the only anchorage on Oahu that the expedition visited.

The Waimea Valley was densely populated at that time, and the remains of Puu-o-Mahuka, an important Hawaiian temple (heiau), can still be seen above the bay.

Pu’u o Mahuka Heiau State Monument is a historically significant Native Hawaiian site located just above the bay and accessible from Pupukea Road. It offers panoramic views of Waimea Bay and the Waianae Mountains.
