Portugal, formally known as the Portuguese Republic, is situated on the Iberian Peninsula in Southwestern Europe. Its territory encompasses not only the mainland but also the macaronesian archipelagos of the Azores, Madeira, and the Savage Islands.

The country boasts the westernmost point in continental Europe, and its portion on the Iberian Peninsula is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south, while Spain forms the northern and eastern borders, being the only nation sharing a land boundary with Portugal. The archipelagos constitute two autonomous regions, each with its own regional governance.

Within the mainland, the Alentejo region covers the largest area, although it is one of the European regions with a relatively lower population density. Lisbon, the capital, holds the distinction of being the most populous city, attracting a significant number of tourists, along with Porto and Algarve.
