Schwäbisch Gmünd, also simply called Gmünd, is part of the administrative district of Stuttgart and is located 50 km north of the city of Stuttgart. This city has been the main center of the Eastern Alb region since 1973. The city has a population of 59,654 (as of December 31, 2010) and an area of 113.78 km².
Among the outstanding personalities associated with this city are the architect Peter Parler, as well as the artists Hans Baldung and Emanuel Leutze. The majestic Church of the Cross (Heiligkreuzkirche) has dominated the city landscape for many centuries. This temple is one of the first examples of a hall temple, with its nave built by the master Heinrich Parler in 1325-30.
