This lake, located in northern San Luis Obispo County, California, extends 18 miles (29 km) along the Nacimiento River. It includes many branches, such as Snake Creek and Deep Creek, closer to the dam, as well as the central streams of Las Tablas and Franklin Creek. Due to its dragon-like shape created by the placement of these arms, the lake is sometimes called Dragon Lake.
Despite its scenic views, Lake Nacimiento is also known for its low levels of fishing activity due to the high levels of mercury present in the water. This is caused by runoff from the closed Klaw and Buena Vista mercury mines, located south of the lake.
