This cathedral, dedicated to the Apostle Andrew the First-Called and containing his relics, is a medieval Roman Catholic church. Previously serving as the archiepiscopal seat of the Diocese of Amalfi, it has become the seat of the Diocese of Amalfi-Cava de’ Tirreni since 1986.
The cathedral, begun in the 9th and 10th centuries, has undergone several reconstructions and restorations, resulting in elements of Arab-Norman, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles.
In the 19th century, it was given a new Norman-Arab-Byzantine façade. The 9th century Basilica of the Crucifixion is also adjacent to the cathedral. Along the steps from the basilica you can go down to the crypt of St. Andrew, where his remains are kept.
