It is part of Brunswick County, most of which is on Oak Island, which it shares with Caswell Beach. Founded in 1999, as a result of the merger of two existing cities. Oak Island’s main economic activity is tourism. According to the 2020 census, the resident population is 8,396 and the summer population is about 50,000. It and Caswell Beach form the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area of North Carolina.

Oak Island was settled in the early 19th century when Fort Caswell was built on its eastern side in 1838. Development of the island was slow, but by the late 1930s it began to attract residents from nearby Southport for fox hunting. Hunting was popular in areas along the Coastline.
