This city is the administrative center of the province of Guipuzcoa and is part of the San Sebastian region.
In 2016, San Sebastian became the European Capital of Culture, sharing this title with the city of Wroclaw. It is also famous for its football club Real Sociedad, which twice became the champion of Spain and won the Copa del Rey three times.
Historically, San Sebastian was an important port in Spain in the 17th century. Today it is a fashionable and prestigious resort on the Bay of Biscay, and its appeal can be partly attributed to the visit of Emperor Napoleon III’s wife, Eugenie Montijo, who first brought the royal court to nearby Biarritz.
Since 1981, an annual cycling race, the Classic of San Sebastian, has been held around the city.
