This is an endorheic lake, one of the 30 largest lakes in the world by area and ranking seventh among the deepest. It is located in the northeastern part of the republic, between the ridges of the Northern Tien Shan: Kungoy-Ala-Too and Terskey Ala-Too, at an altitude of 1608 meters above sea level.
The lake and its surroundings have been included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves since 2001, and on the Ramsar List of Wetlands since 1976.
The unique combination of sea and mountain climate attracts numerous holidaymakers and tourists. There are boarding houses and holiday homes along the entire coast. Lake Issyk-Kul is the main source of tourism income in Kyrgyzstan. At the same time, there are still many unexplored places on the coast of Lake Issyk-Kul, which are gradually turning into new resorts.
