Webcam on the landmark of Italy – Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The Tre Cime di Lavaredo, known as the Drei Zinnen in German, represents a trio of distinct fortress-like peaks nestled in the Sexten Dolomites of northeastern Italy. These peaks are widely recognized and stand as a prominent mountain formation in the Alps. The three peaks, listed from east to west, include:

  • Cima Piccola / Kleine Zinne (“small peak”)
  • Cima Grande / Große Zinne (“large peak”)
  • Cima Ovest / Westliche Zinne (“western peak”)

An image of Tre Cime from the base of Torre di Toblin mountain showcases their grandeur. Composed of well-layered dolomites from the Dolomia Principale formation, these peaks date back to the Carnian to Rhaetian periods, aligning with the geological composition of numerous other groups in the Dolomites.

Historically, until 1919, these peaks marked the border between Italy and Austria-Hungary. Presently, they straddle the border between the Italian provinces of South Tyrol and Belluno, still representing a linguistic boundary between the German-speaking and Italian-speaking majorities. Among them, Cima Grande stands tallest, reaching an elevation of 2,999 meters, positioned between Cima Piccola at 2,857 meters and Cima Ovest at 2,973 meters.
