Historically, these houses were built in1921and have been restored to recreate the atmosphere of the houses of wealthy Portuguese families who lived inMacauduring the first half of the 20th century.
The last of these houses was restored in1999. The Taipa House Museums opened to the public on December 5, 1999 and are managed by the Bureau of Cultural Affairs.
Previously, the houses faced the sea, but due to land works between Taipa and Coloane, the sea area was transformed into a shallow place.
Every autumn, this open space near the museums hosts theLusophonia Festival, organized by the Bureau of Cultural Affairs.
