At this place stood one of the 4 gates of Bratislava with a tower. The gate was built in the 13th century and demolished in 1778. From now on, the place where the gate was hung with bars and installed in the paving stones of the corresponding memorial plaques.

The gate got its name in honor of St. Lawrence-the patron saint of the kitchen and grill, as the legend says, St. Lawrence was roasted alive by his tormentors on an iron grate.

Why visit.

  • Laurentian Street is one of Bratislava’s busiest pedestrian areas, with many cafes, stores and restaurants.
  • There are interesting modern art objects, such as the sculpture of Čumil, the famous worker peering out of a sewer manhole.
  • It’s a great place to experience the atmosphere of the old town and imagine what it was like in the Middle Ages.

Although the Laurentian Gate has disappeared, Bratislava’s only surviving medieval gate, the Michalská brána, can be seen nearby!
