Mayon under ash advisory as plume rises to 5.5 km

Mayon is under an ash advisory, and the Tokyo Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre says an eruption at 03:53 UTC sent ash to about 5.5 km above sea level.
The advisory says the ash cloud was stretching to the west-southwest, though satellite data could not clearly identify it. Open the Mayon Volcano camera in Albay for the view closest to the summit.
Mayon rises above the Albay Gulf north-west of Legazpi City, and the Smithsonian says its steep, symmetrical cone has made it the most active volcano in the Philippines. The same source notes that it became the first national park in the country in 1938, later renamed Mayon Volcano Natural Park.
