Mayon is erupting, and the Tokyo Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre said ash has reached about 4.3 km above sea level.

The advisory reports an eruption at 0022Z with ash extending to the southwest. The Albay camera sits about 1 km from the summit, so it gives a close view of the volcano's upper slopes. Mayon rises above the Albay Gulf northwest of Legazpi City, and the Smithsonian says it is a stratovolcano, 2,462 m high, and the most active volcano in the Philippines.

The volcano's cone is known for its symmetrical shape, and the surrounding landscape became the country's first national park in 1938. The Smithsonian says recorded eruptions since 1616 CE have ranged from Strombolian to basaltic Plinian, with lava flows and pyroclastic density currents often sweeping down the ravines that radiate from the summit.
