Nestled on the Kola Peninsula, between Lake Imandra and the Khibiny mountain range along the left bank of the Belaya River, Apatity is strategically located. The city hosts the Apatity-1 railway station on the Murmansk - Belomorsk line of the Oktyabrskaya railway. With a population of 48,748 people as of 2023, it holds the distinction of being the fifth-largest city globally located beyond the Arctic Circle. Established in 1916 as the Bely crossing, coinciding with the initiation of the Murmansk railway construction, Apatity-1 railway station now occupies its original site. During the Russian Civil War (August 1918 to February 1920), it fell under the control of the Northern Region. The village of Apatity emerged in 1926, initially housing only seven inhabitants. In 1930, the state farm "Industry" was established, and the transformation into an urban-type working settlement occurred in 1935 with the discovery and development of the Khibiny deposits of apatite-nepheline ores, incorporating the village of the state farm "Industry" into its bounds.
