Watch a webcam that broadcasts live images of the Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico. This volcano is active and located in the Transverse Volcanic Belt.

The name “Popocatepetl” comes from two words in the Nahuatl language: “popoca” means “smoking” and “tepetl” means “hill”, so its name translates as “smoking hill”.

Popocatepetl is the second highest mountain in Mexico after Orizaba Peak and reaches an altitude of 5426 meters. It is located next to the extinct volcano Iztaccihuatl, and their names come from the names of the heroes of the legend of Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl.

Important cities such as Puebla, Tlaxcala and Mexico City are located near the volcano, making up a total conurbation of more than 20 million people. The first person to climb to the top of Popocatepetl was Diego de Ordaz, who then included the image of the volcano in his coat of arms.
