Founded in 644 during the time of Empress Kogyoku, this monastery is also known as Jogakuzan (Mountain of Settlement). Historically, it was known as Shimonshigaku, comprising four temples: Jogaku Zenkoji (Temple of Good Light) in the east, Nammyosan Muryojuji (Temple of Eternal Life) in the south, Hokukusan Unjoji (Temple of the Clouds) in the north, and Fushasan Jodoji (Temple of the Pure Land). in the West.

Since the 13th century, Zenkoji has become a place of pilgrimage for many Japanese, and temples called Zenkoji or Shin-Zenkoji have been built in different parts of the country. Until the 16th century, the monastery became the site of conflict between samurai, but during the period of peace in Edo from the 17th to the 19th centuries, it again became one of the most visited Buddhist centers in Japan.
