The Royal Albatross webcam, which has been called the RoyalCam since 2016, is situated of the Otago Peninsula within the Taiaroa Head Nature Reserve.

Taiaroa Head, also known as Pukekura, is famous worldwide as the sole mainland albatross colony in the Southern Hemisphere. It holds historical significance for both Māori and European settlers.

With nearly 10,000 seabirds inhabiting Taiaroa Head, there are abundant opportunities for observing wildlife in this area. However, the timing is crucial.

Some species are only present during specific times of the year, while others engage in nocturnal activities on land. Additionally, certain weather conditions with adequate wind are preferred by species like the giant albatross for soaring.
