The ancient Latin settlement of Ajaccio, mentioned in the letters of Pope Gregory the Great, lost its importance when in 1492 the negociants of the Genoese Bank of St. George founded the present city. At first it was a fortified colony of the Genoese Republic, but later Ajaccio came under French rule, becoming part of France in 1768.
